There is a company in chesterfield who erect fencing/gates which are 'treated' so they don't rust or need painting. We had our double gates from them years ago and never had to touch them, worth the extra money.

I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

Pete, if you're still planning on bamboo as a screen, I'd get some advice on it.  Although I don't want to put you off, I've got some in my garden that I wish I hadn't planted now.  Once it's got a hold, you've got it forever.  A bit like rhubarb!  I have to say it looks lovely, but I battle with it every year to keep it cut back so it doesn't take over.  I've now confined it to one corner, but the runners spring up through the soil all along that border.

The cat loves it though, and she's often to be found snoozing in there in the summer.   :D

I hope that helps.

@Gerty - I've already been warned about that. Apparently there is some stuff you can buy that you put in the ground that stops it spreading - root barrier fabric. You dig a trench around the bamboo area and put this stuff in. I checked on the rhs.org.uk site and they approve it, so will give that a go. Bu thanks for mentioning the problem - I'm on a steep learning curve here cos I never did any gardening before...  :-[
