Stay at home for your holidays this year
« on: March 07, 2012, 01:08:34 PM »
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-17284937

Oh dear.  We are now being 'encouraged' to have a holiday at home this year, in other words a (and I hate the word) 'staycation'.

Im sorry but part of the quote is "Rupert Grint asks why anyone would go surfing in Bondi when they could go to Bridlington Beach, in Yorkshire".  Hmm, the weather?

But the best bit: "Blackpool, Skegness, Yorkshire, Liverpool, will be showcased as part of the campaign".

Showcase, Blackpool and Skeggy?  What could put people off more than those 2 places.  Apologies if I offend anyone but last time I went to these places (last year) they were both complete dumps.  Blackpool was full off pissed stag and hen parties and Skeggy, well I couldnt look at the view out to sea as I was looking at the ground avoiding all the dog crap on the coastal paths.  Cant comment on Liverpool as ive never been.

Whats wrong with showcasing the better areas, like the Peak District, Scotland and Wales, IMO much better places to visit, than Blackpoo and Skegvegas

I had a day in Skegness last Summer.  It used to be a pleasant place to go but it's now badly neglected and a total dump.

It's a shame that you missed the "view out to sea" because I'm sure you'd have been as impressed as I was with the dozens of wind turbines.

Not been to skeggy for a while but Blackpool--- yes I agree it's a dump for hen and stags nights, not a family place at all these days. We said if we 'ever' went again it would be Mon. to fri -  never have though

Yes, it's a shame about Skegness, we used to go there when were kids. Only been there on day trips since the late 60s but not been at all in the last 10 years or so. It was handy being just a couple of hours away.

Since those days, apart from holidays abroad, we tend to go to Cornwall for the odd weeks holiday - why aren't they promoting that? Much nicer than the "bracing" east coast ;) IMHO
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

Me and SWMBO went there for a day out last year, we too were impressed with the wind turbines, but it does seem to be a rather neglected 'resort' - particularly at the extreme North & South parts.
Even the major shops (eg M&S) seem to have pulled out of the town, leaving empty units. Seems now to be a place full of fish & chip shops and amusement arcades.

Agreed with all of the above.
Skeggy and Blackpool full of chavs. We sometimes go to Skeggy for a day out, let the kids have a run in the sea but only because its closest. Last year my eldest, who doesn't live with me, (so knows no better, lol), and her boyfriend went to Skeggy for the week and I played taxi. On the Saturday, took them down there, Ingoldmells actually, and had an hour walking round. After that we had done everything, why on earth would you need a whole week.
And a few years ago we went to Cleethorpes for the week, and all week long the shops were shut, until the weekend!!!This was at the end of June.
On top of that, everything in this country is a rip off. Last time we went to Alton Towers, a few years ago now, and they kicked us off the rides at 5.00 so they could close at 6.00, peak season!!, you spend a fortune, and most of the day you spend queuing.

Later this year we will be going abroad, where the weather is always good so you can spend all day on the beach or by the pool if you want. The past couple of years, the kids have been small and when you jump on the bus, the driver just turns a blind eye to the kids not expecting any payment. We usually go to Port Aventura theme Park and a weeks ticket costs not much more than a daily one at Alton Towers. There are a lot more shows and stuff, not just rides, but the point is, the earliest they close is 8.00 and peak season its midnight, after a firework display, meaning you can take your time getting around, without missing anything you want to do....in fact the queues are much shorter at night. Last year, while in Barcelona, we called in a chemist for some cream as the smallest had a rash, and as the wife was trying to explain in English what she wanted to the assistant, another assistant came over and give the kids a lolly each. This kind of stuff happens often when you have small kids but not in this country.

Having said that, apart from our main holiday, we do like to do a bit of camping for a few long weekends in the summer, and North Yorks, is nice. Scarborough is the best of all the local seaside resorts IMHO. It is nice in Devon / Cornwall but too far to drive for us, if just for a couple of days.

We'll be holidaying at home this year due to not being able to get affordable insurance after my husbands bypass operation.  Once a full year has passed, we may be able to get something affordable but for now we're looking at the cost of his share of the holiday in insurance premiums!!

Whilest I hate Skeg with a vengeance, it does have some redeeming places such as Gibraltar Point.  The view over the estuary from the viewing platform above the beach is lovely.  Given the right light you can see the sea as actual blue, and the sandbanks glowing yellow underneath.  Plus you can see Hunstanton quite clearly.

But I agree with the others, there are far better places to showcase than Skeg and Blackpool.  We need to keep plugging The Peak District!

The Peak District is an inconvenience between me and Manchester Airport.
