Carer recruits 'must speak English'

Im sorry if this appears to come across as racist, thats not my intention.

If you want to come over and live and work in Great Britain, you should have at least a basic knowledge of the English language.  If you dont have that then you should be on the next plane back.  It should apply to any profession

There was a programme on TV where one woman had lived in London for over 15 years and couldnt speak a word of English, what is she doing here apart from claiming off the state

Not racist in the least Simon.  Just being a realist, I'd say.

Given the poor language skills of a lot of migrants, employing them in care homes isn't good, but of course they are obliged to aren't they?  Jobs in care homes require careful training, so how can they hope to successfully train someone to work to a process and set criteria, if the language skills are lacking?  Not only that, the people in the care homes who provide the training are probably lacking in skills such as ESOL so they won't be making much headway.  Its a vicious circle for sure  :(

I know you Simon and the post is fine by me  MD
I agree with you, there are certain taxi drivers in Chesterfield that I can't converse with. I can't understand them  :?
How are they supposed to integrate with the public, if they can't speak the language.

Just seen this.
I also agree, during my 'supervising' days I decided to give a lovely hard working lady a chance to try the till.
Couldn't do it bless her, I hadn't realise how much she struggled with our money - that's another spin of it.

Not a pop at you Simon, but the lady you speak of, was she married? Did her husband have a job and pay taxes? I didn't see the program so I can't comment.

Why do we assume if someone from abroad can't speak our language that they are claiming benefits?
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

A carer should have to speak the language of those she/ he visits because a big part of the job is being company for the client. Not so crucial for other jobs otherwise who do top football coaches get by without speaking English and managing players with several different languages?
